COVID-19 IS A NEW VIRAL INFECTION THAT IS PART OF THE FAMILY OF CORONAVIRUSES.  IT IS BELIEVED TO BE A RECENT MUTATION FORM POSSIBLY A BAT, AND NOW HAS THE ABILITY TO INVADE THE HUMAN BODY.  CORONAVIRUSES ARE A FAMILY OF VIRUSES THAT INFECT PEOPLE, OFTEN WITH COLD-LIKE SYMPTOMS, AND OTHER SPECIES WITH DIFFERENT SYSTEMS, BUT GENERALLY ARE NOT CONSIDERED ZOONOTIC, UNLESS THEY MUTATE.

SINCE THE APPEARANCE OF COVID-19 (THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS THAT EMERGED IN THE LAST MONTHS OF 2019) IT HAS TAKEN THE WORLD BY STORM.  OUR BODIES HAVE NO INNATE RESISTENCE SINCE THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS VIRUS BEFORE.  BECAUSE IT IS NOVEL TO US, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, OR MORE, PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD WILL GET INFECTED TO SOME DEGREE. FORTUNATELY, AS WE HAVE SEEN IN CHINA THE LARGE MAJORITY OF THE CASES ARE MILD TO NO OBVIOUS SYMPTOMS, BUT THEY ARE STILL INFECTIOUS. THIS HAS ALREADY PLAYED OUT IN CHINA AND NOW IT IS GAINING A FOOTHOLD THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.  AS YET THERE IS NO VACCINE TO HELP PEOPLE DEVELOP RESISITANCE TO IT SO THE HEALTH SYSTEM IS TRYING MIGHTILY TO SLOW DOWN TRANSMISSION, WHICH WOULD HELP THE LOAD OF ILL ON THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, AND MAYBE BUY TIME FOR THOUSANDS UNTIL A VACCINE IS DEVELOPED.

FOR VETERINARIANS THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT SO FAR THERE IS NO EVEIDENCE THAT OUR PETS BECOME INFECTED.  THAT IS BEING CLOSELY FOLLOWED BUT SO FAR THE RESULTS ARE LOOKING PROMISING.  OUR ROLE AS HEALTH PROFESSIONS IS TO HELP YOU CONTINUE TO CARE OF YOUR PETS NEEDS, WITHOUT ENDANGERING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OR OUR OWN.

WE HAVE ADDED SOME LINKS FOR RELIABLE INFORMATION FOR YOU TO READ MORE ABOUT IT, INCLUDING THE CDC, STATE OF CT, AVMA, AND CVMA.
